How Invisalign Works

How Invisalign Works

If you’re concerned about crooked teeth, you have good cause. In addition to affecting the beauty of your smile, crooked teeth can cause oral health complications, like infection or gingivitis.

Years ago, the only option for straightening your teeth was a mouth full of metal. But thanks to Invisalign® clear dental aligners and the dedicated team at Legacy Dental Care in Ballwin, Missouri, straightening your teeth is easier and smoother than ever.

Amanda Darling, DDS, specializes in helping patients of all ages get the straighter teeth of their dreams. Take a moment to learn more about how Invisalign aligners work and whether they might be the right choice for you.

Understanding Invisalign dental aligners

Over 8 million Americans have picked Invisalign to straighten their smiles, making these computer-generated molds the most popular clear dental aligners to realign or correct teeth that are growing in or are set out of place.

Beginning the Invisalign process

The process begins at your consultation when Dr. Darling takes photographs and X-rays as well as impressions, or molds, of your teeth to create a detailed map of your mouth mechanics. This serves as the basis for our recommendations for your dental work.

Depending on your needs, some patients may require additional preparatory work, such as adding small composite patches to help Invisalign’s clear aligners grip the tooth, or interproximal reduction, which involves filing away some dental enamel to make room in crowded spaces.

How your clear aligners work

When you receive your clear Invisalign aligners, they’re designed to fit snugly over your teeth. They may feel tight at first, and that’s as it should be since they’re working using a constant but gentle force to move your teeth into the correct position.

Invisalign clear aligners are made from patented SmartTrack® material, a highly elastic material that’s more comfortable than other alternatives. This cutting-edge material also makes it easier to put on and take off your aligners. What’s more? SmartTrack helps move your teeth into place up to 50% faster than other alternatives.

Using the iTero Element® scanner from the makers of Invisalign, Dr. Darling creates a 3D image of your teeth and simulates the specific movements of each tooth at each stage of alignment. This amazing technology helps ensure the most precise fit for the best results possible.

For patients with teeth that need more help moving into position, Dr. Darling can use SmartForce® attachments from Invisalign to treat more complex movements without braces. SmartForce attachments are tiny, barely visible attachments that help the Invisalign aligners apply the exact amount of force needed to help troublesome teeth move in the right direction.

How to wear your aligners

Once you begin the Invisalign treatments, you’ll need to wear your aligners every day for 20-22 hours a day. You’ll advance to a new set of aligners every two weeks or so, and continue to wear your aligners for 12-18 months, depending on your unique needs.

One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is that they don’t interfere with your ability to eat your favorite foods. Simply remove the aligners at mealtime and put them back in place when you’re through.

You can keep your usual daily brushing and flossing routine. All you need to do is take out your Invisalign aligners to brush and floss your teeth normally, and replace them when you’ve finished cleaning your teeth.
